University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine names chairman of Neurological Surgery
Robert Friedlander, MD, has joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine to head the Department of Neurological Surgery. Both an accomplished clinician and scientist, Dr. Friedlander divides his time between treating complex cerebrovascular disorders and brain tumors and investigating cell death in neurological diseases, brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries.
Most recently, Dr. Friedlander was professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School and vice chairman of neurosurgery and associate director of cerebrovascular surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
“Dr. Friedlander is highly regarded in the scientific community and among fellow neurosurgeons,” says Arthur Levine, MD, senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and dean, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. “Additionally, he is an excellent teacher and mentor for medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. His unique blend of clinical skills and academic credentials make him superbly suited to lead this department.”
Dr. Friedlander has authored 59 peer-reviewed research reports and is a frequent invited lecturer. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Dr. Friedlander received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in biochemistry from Brandeis University and a medical degree from Harvard Medical School, followed by a residency in neurological surgery, also at Harvard.
Dr. Friedlander assumed his position at Pitt on June 1 and began seeing patients at UPMC at the end of June. Follow this link for a high-resolution photograph of Dr. Friedlander.
